Moving from Cloudinary

Cloudinary keeps uploaded copies of your images; this edge fetches them from your own origin. The transformations map closely, from path segments to query parameters.

What is different

Cloudinary's upload delivery serves copies you uploaded to it, and writes transformations into the path, such as /w_800,c_fill/. This edge has no upload: it fetches each image from an origin you run, and takes the same instructions as query parameters. Its fetch delivery type is the closest match. If your originals exist only in Cloudinary, export them to storage you host first.

Moving, step by step

  1. Make sure your originals are at an HTTPS origin you control, exporting them from Cloudinary if that is the only copy.
  2. Create an account and set that origin.
  3. Rewrite each delivery URL: the public id becomes the path, and each transformation becomes a query parameter from the table below.
  4. Turn named transformations into presets in the console, and re-sign any signed URLs with a key from it.

What has no equivalent here

  • Uploading and storing images, and the media library.
  • Video, and output that moves.
  • Chained transformations, applied one after another.
  • Gravity by compass direction, such as g_north. fp takes a point instead.
  • Text in a chosen font and size.
